Description: Up for sale is a brand-new copy of "Sabotage in the Arctic: Fate of the Submarine Nautilus" written Stewart B. Nelson, PhD. It was published by a friend and colleague of mine in the field of marine geology and oceanography in 2007, making a compelling case for nefarious events in 1931 when a privately-funded expedition was undertaken with the submarine Nautilus to sail under the Arctic ice cap across the North Pole. The project was undertaken by Sir Hubert Wilkens, an Australian explorer and adventurer Lincoln Ellsworth, an American journalist in a decommissioned and modified WW I American submarine. Much of the funding came from donations and the sales of philatelic materials as the submarine stopped at various ports in the Arctic prior to the actual expedition. Although the optimal reason for the sabotage that prevented the final quest for the Pole (underwater), is unproved, Nelson documents the reasoning for the final loss. Later, the submarine was scuttled and sunk, and Nelson led a team to locate (underwater) it for posterity. The book is profulsely illustrated with photographs of the original cruise and the location of the sunken wreck as well. "Stew" passed away in 2016, a year shy of his 80th birthday. The book has been sitting in an honored place on my professional bookcase since I received it NEW in 2007. It is in pristine condition, read only once. Shipping weight is about a pound..
