May, wrote a booklet about a little red-nosed reindeer named Rudolph.They tucked this booklet into every catalog, and handed them out free to every child entering the store. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer soon became a Christmas classic. This softcover Rudolph poem booklet was first distributed by Montgomery Ward during the 1939 holiday season. Shoppers loved it and 2.4 million copies were distributed. Wartime restrictions on paper use prevented a re-issue until 1946. The illustrator, Canadian-born Denver Gillen, was a young commercial artist who also worked for Montgomery Ward, and would go on to become the chief illustrator for Reader's Digest.
