Description: Two Hawaiian Panoramic Yard Long Photographs, Waikiki Beach and Moanalua Gardens in Honolulu --1915 Author: Noggle, Roy Title: Two Hawaiian Panoramic Yard Long Photographs, Waikiki Beach and Moanalua Gardens in Honolulu --1915 Publication: 1915 Description: Two Hawaiian Panoramic Yard Long Photographs, Waikiki Beach and Moanalua Gardens in Honolulu --1915Both photos in very good condition. Little to no emulsion cracking. Images remain sharp and clean. Annotation in pencil on verso of both. Very light silvering and edge wear.Moanalua Gardens measures 8 x 31.5 inches and Waikiki Beach is 8 x 39 inches. Photograph of the gardens is Moanalua Gardens in Honolulu (not Mauna Lua or Mauna Loa) The gardens are the location of King Kamehameha V's summer house.Striking image of Moanalua Gardens which is almost deserted at time of photograph. Small meandering pond in the foreground with palm trees and an impressive collection of mature trees throughout. Photo is dated in the negative with photographer's catalog number of 1078.Second photograph is the legendary Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. The image is loaded with beach activity including sunbathing, rowing, outrigger canoeing and swimming. A long pier juts out into the harbor. "1059 Noggle Photo" and "Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, HI 1915" in the negative.Roy L. Noggle (1877-1920), was from Allegan, Michigan. He enlisted in Co. K, 34th Michigan Volunteers, in 1898 for the Spanish-American War. Sometime before 1915 he was posted to Honolulu and became a photographer for the "Army & Navy News Staff". We find records of both official military photos plus several civilian photos by Roy Noggle but apparently was not prolific. In viewing my scans of these yard longs, they appear to have a sepia tone to them. The actual photograph are black and white. Yard longs are difficult to photographs and I had to shoot in different light than I usually use.
