Description: Valerian I | AE Antoninianus Reference: RIC V.1 287 Date: 256-260 CE Obverse: IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS P F AVG; bust, radiate, draped, right Reverse: RESTITVT ORIENTIS: Turreted Orient draped, standing right, presenting wreath to emperor, standing left, holding spear in left hand Mint: Antioch Size: 21.1 mm Weight: 2.80 grams IRONIC ISSUE: The reverse legend, RESTITVT ORIENTIS, proclaims Valerian I as the restorer of the East. This is likely an allusion to Valerian repulsing the 253-256 CE Sasanid Persian invasion of Syria .Yet this messaging was very premature. In 260 CE, while on another campaign against the Persians; Valerian I was hoodwinked during a parlay and captured by Shapur I. Valerian's imprisonment marked rock bottom for the Roman empire's fortunes during the third century. According to Eutropius and Lanctantius the aged emperor suffered many indignities at the hands of his captors, such as being used as a human footstool for Shapur I as he mounted his horse. Allegedly, Valerian finally met his miserable end by being forced to swallow molten gold or by being flayed alive. One tradition maintains that Valerian's skin was then stuffed with straw and hung in the royal Persian hall. ROUGH. A great historically ironic type.
