Description: Justin I | AE Pentanummium Reference: SB 111 Date: 518-527 CE Obverse: DN IVSTINVS PP AV, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. Reverse: Tyche of Antioch seated, retrograde epsilon to left, all within shrine Mint: Antioch Size: 14.0 mm Weight: 1.68 grams Ex. Vitangelo Collection. A very fine small bronze coin issued in the early sixth century CE. It remains in remarkably good condition for the type with strong striking on the obverse and reverse. The pentanummi of Justin I bore a number of different designs and this one from Antioch bears that city's patron goddess Tyche. Circa 300 BCE the Greek sculptor Eutychides created a colossal statue of Tyche, the goddess of fortune, for the newly founded Seleucid city of Antioch. Since that time the city struck coins bearing their pagan goddess' image. This coin continues that 800 year tradition, despite being nearly 200 years into the Christian period. Its probable that this pagan iconography was entirely secular by the sixth century, and that the mint was merely striking coins with Tyche as a civic symbol, not a god to be worshipped. Regardless, to my knowledge, this is the last instance of a pagan god or goddess appearing on Roman coinage. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
