Very nice example of a 12th century trachy compared to what is typically found. Alexius III was an ineffective leader, who plundered the empire's wealth for himself and his wife. He fled Constantinople in 1203 CE after a siege by the forces of the Fourth Crusade. He was ultimately captured by the Crusaders, ransomed, and exiled to a monastery where he died in 1211 CE.
