Description: Free Domestic Shipping. This is an original envelope (it's real deal--this is NOT a reproduction) that once contained a now-gone letter. It was taken to the post office by the writer and mailed through the United States Postal Services' mail. It is a "stampless cover." You are purchasing only the postal portion. I do not have the letter. ONE of the reasons it is collectible is because of the fact that the local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the letter's journey. In addition to being collectable because of the town or origin, the addressee, or something else that may appeal to you, it is a collectable item of "postal history" because of the rates, markings and usage. An absolutely super transatlantic cover with a black "ROCHESTER N.Y. APR 2" as an origination marking, then a "NEW YORK BR. PKT. 23 APR 3" marking and a circle "30" -- all on the obverse addressed to "Rev. Isaac Gilbert, Care of American Minister, Berlin, Prussia." Also on the obverse "13" in blue crayon. On the reverse, "AACHEN 14 4" marking in blue circle and "15/4 9-10Vm" in another blue circle. Very scarce and desirable markings and usage. This item is from the collection of Calvet Hahn and is accompanied by his original album notes. Mr. Hahn's collection is very fresh to the market. Most of his items, including this one, have not been offered for sale for 35-50 years. Many of the items are "listing" and/or "recording" items according to his album notes. Free Domestic Shipping.
