Description: ROBERT E. LEE BY JEFFERSON DAVIS and ALEXANDER STEPHENS EDITED AND WITH AN INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY COLONEL HAROLD B. SIMPSON FIRST EDITION FINE CONDITION BOOK FINE CONDITION DUST JACKET Sharp, Bright, Clean, Solidly Bound, New Book Rich with Period Photographs, Battle Maps and Charts Contains an Appendix and Bibliography; Fully Indexed PUBLISHED BY HILL JUNIOR COLLEGE, HILLSBORO, TEXAS IN 1983 These biographical studies of Robert T. Lee by Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens first appeared in magazines shortly after their deaths. Davis’ article was published in the North American Review in 1890 and Stephens’ study in the Southern Bivouac in 1883. These were probably the last formal pieces of historical writing to come from the pens of Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens. Except for short references to general lee’s life, character and military abilities in their previously published works, this is the only lengthy treatment of the leader of the Army of Northern Virginia by the President and Vice President of the Southern Confederacy. These are short, well-written and revealing studies. They buttress the contention that Robert E. Lee was one of America’s great military commanders and a gentleman of the highest order. Davis in many respects, was in a better position to evaluate Lee than any other man. The relationship between Lee and Davis was very close at times and always friendly although some historians have attempted to build a barrier between the two men. In each situation in which the two were closely associated, Davis held the supreme position. At the United States Military Academy, the Mississippian was one class ahead of the Virginian. When Lee was superintendent of west Point Davis was the Secretary of War and during the War between the States Jefferson Davis occupied the Chief Executive Chair as Commander-in-Chief while Robert E. Lee commanded one of the major Confederate Armies Thus Davis saw Lee in a light that no other biographer shared or was in a position to share. The contact between Lee and Stephens, while not as close or aa long standing as that o Lee and Davis, nevertheless was of some importance. Stephens came in contact with Lee early in the Virginia’s wartime career when he commanded the Virginia State Military Forces prior to the secession of that State. Lee, mad an indelible impression upon Stephens at this first meeting, a favorable impression that was magnified as the war progressed and as Stephens became better acquainted with the man and the soldier. Like Davis Stephens was a critical, but shrewd observer, more prone to criticism than to praise. These heart-warming, dynamic appraisals of a great American are just as inspirational today as when they were written almost a century ago. Colonel Simpson’s interesting and informative notes add much to the two narratives and give additional information of the character and service of General Robert E. Lee. A portfolio of sixteen specially selected photographs of Lee appear in the volume. FINE CONDITION This first edition book is in excellent condition. It comes in a fine condition dust jacket.
