Description: Pan Journal #1 Winter 1958 with beautiful wraparound cover by Robert Smithson, apparently his first ever published drawing. Smithson would have been 20 and only recently out of college at the time. Pan was a quarterly journal of poetry edited and published by Alan Brilliant, who later showed some of Smithson's work (the colophon simply states about him that "Robert Smithson will be exhibiting in New York this season). Other contributions here from Dick Fass, Frank J. Darlington, James Wright, Cecil Hemley, James May, Felix Stefanile, William Pillin, Harold Briggs, Michael Benedikt, Tim Reynolds, Harold Witt, Samuel Menashe, and Fred Cogswell. Rare in very good condition. From the home of a tobacco smoker, such that the wraps have been very faintly toned at the extremities (really noticeable only at the spine, but lightly so even there) and interior pages retain a subtle aroma of smoke, still inoffensively so but needing to be mentioned. Shelfwear otherwise mild, with some light rubbing at the edges of wraps, with page interiors bright and crisp. Book in custom cut mylar. This copy is unmarked save for the previous owner's inscription to the upper corner of masthead.
