Description: Robert Rauschenberg worked in a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, prints, photography, and performance, over the span of six decades. He studied at the experimental Black Mountain College where former Bauhaus instructor Josef Albers was his teacher. His mentors and collaborators included the composer John Cage, the artist Cy Twombly, and the choreographer Merce Cunningham. His dialogue with the artist Jasper Johns shaped the work of both: together they integrated the language and materials of the everyday world. Like Andy Warhol, Rauschenberg incorporated practices common in design and graphic production in his work, transferring photographs from magazines and newspapers and incorporating text. His collages marked a shift in practice from Abstract Expressionism and pointed towards the Pop Art of Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. This poster celebrated his collaboration with Los Angeles-based Gemini G.E.L. and promoted an exhibition at the National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan in 1988. Rauschenberg's collage celebrates the U.S. space program, combining a diagram of of a rocket with images of lift-offs at Cape Canaveral. This rare poster was printed using offset lithographic ink for color fidelity and has been stored flat, protected from light. Ships in carefully packed art tube to protect edges.
