Erickson attended the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota 1963- 1968. Erickson became enchanted with hand lithography while attending an elective printmaking course at the University of Minnesota. Erickson's passion for print making led him to New York, where he spent the summer of 1971 as Assistant Printer at Universal Limited Art Editions. Erickson went on to establish and lead the Lithography section of Styria Studio in New York City between 1972-1976. In 1985, Erickson became Master Printer in Residence (summers), at The Vinalhaven Press, Vinalhaven, Maine. As a Master Printmaker, John Christian Erickson (1945- 2010) was an art world "insider". Throughout his four decades long career, Erickson regularly collaborated with the leading artists of his time, including, but not limited to: Shasaku Arakawa, Louise Bourgeois, Dan Flavin, Robert Indiana, Alex Katz, Roy Lichtenstein, Brice Marden, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, James Rosenquist, Susan Rothenberg, Ed Ruscha, and Richard Serra.
