Description: Here we have an original watercolor by the late Connecticut artist, Robert R. Newell. Robert was a successful advertising executive who turned to researching the history of whaling industry and producing beautiful whale ship portraits. A number of these reside in the Nantucket Whaling Museum. This is a caricature of the famous "Nantucket Sleigh Ride," which occurred when a harpooned whale would drag its pursuers along at a great rate of speed. If the whale decided to sound or dive, the whalers would have to be quick to cut the ropes before their tiny whaleboat was sent to the depths. This original watercolor was purchased directly from the artist in the 1970s and has been recently reframed with archival materials included UV protected glass. The frame itself is a handsome burl wood veneer. The watercolor itself has a sight size of 14" x 22" The outside dimensions of the frame are 22" x 29 1/2". The piece comes from a smoke free home and is ready to hang.
