Grant in 1871. It accompanied a certificate of membership in the Hibernian Society for Grant, who was President. Autograph letter signed "R Patterson". Erase pencil notations in top left corner and on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 5x8, 1 sheet folded. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, March 18, 1871. Addressed to "General US Grant/President". In full: "My dear General You have been unani-mously Elected a Member of the Hibernian Society, and it gives me great pleasure to forward to you by express (Adams) your framed Certi-ficate [sic]of membership [not included], and I venture the expert [illegible] it when hung in your office. It will call up kind ly [sic] feelings in the bosoms of those of Irish birth or descent who may chance to be there. With kind regards to Mrs Grant I remain most respectfully and truly yours". The Hibernian Society was founded in Philadelphia in 1793 and was originally called the Hibernian Society for the Relief of Immigrants from Ireland. Patterson (1792-1881, born in Cappagh, County Tyrone, Ireland) was an American businessman and military officer who fought in three major American wars of the 19th century. He volunteered to fight in the War of 1812 and served in the 2nd Pennsylvania Militia and the United States Army; he was discharged in 1815 as a captain. He was then commissioned as a major general of volunteers during the Mexican-American War and fought during the Siege of Veracruz and the Battle of Cerro Gordo, where he was wounded, and led the American pursuit of the Mexican army to Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, where he was the first to enter the city. During the American Civil War, he was appointed major general of Pennsylvania volunteers and commanded the Department of Pennsylvania and the Army of the Shenandoah. However, Patterson failed to delay Confederate forces at the Battle of Hoke's Run (July 2, 1861), which took pressure off the Confederate States Army and contributed to the Union defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861). Patterson was widely criticized for his performance at Hoke's Run and was given an honorable discharge late in July 1861. Patterson was also a cotton miller and returned to this work after being mustered out of the Civil War. He also wrote a book, A Narrative of the Campaign in the Valley of the Shenandoah, in 1861 (1865). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally.
