This copy in a nice fine three-quarter leather binding signed by Riviere & Son binders. Top edge gilt, spine featuring raised bands and gilt pictorial flowers, gorgeous patterned endpapers to match the cover. Charles Kingsley, (1819 - 1875) was a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives, which failed, but encouraged later working reforms. Kingsley was a prolific author, and much involved in various social improvement activities. Some of his many fictional works (A few of which had immense popularity) are : "Yeast", a novel ; "Alton Locke", a novel ; "Hypatia", a novel ; "Westward Ho!, a novel ; "The Water Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby." Condition is good. Some wear and rubbing to covers, plus some foxing/staining to title page. Still a handsome book in a lovely Riviere fine binding.
