This is Ritchie Calder's first book in which he presents a wary vision of the future, dependent on good science and technology. Including chapters on "The Transport of the Future" (The 300 mile an hour car), "The Chemist's Formula for the Future" (Clothing in a Test-tube) and "The Homes of the Future" (The Flat Age: Self Contained Communities). The book is in very pleasing condition, with light wear and bumping, and some rubbing and marking to boards (see pictures). Light toning to the page edges. Binding sound and square. A scarce signed example. Peter Ritchie Calder (1906-1982) was a Scottish author and academic. During the second World war, director of plans and campaigns at Political Warfare Executive, responsible for the allied war propaganda effort. He wrote a very popular book in 1941 called Carry on London, which described the effects of the German bombardment of London and other cities. He was appointed an OBE in 1945 for his work during the war, and later created a life peer. Provenance: This book was part of the collection of the celebrated book seller and collector George Locke.
