Description: • For Your Consideration: • A SIGNED & INSCRIBED* HARDCOVER edition of: • “THE NORTH CAROLINA MISCELLANY”(The University of North Carolina Press, 1975) (Hardcover, First Edition, Second Printing) • EDITED BY RICHARD WALSER *SIGNING NOTE: The editor RICHARD WALSER’s inscription & signature appear in green ink on the front free endpaper as follows: “For DOROTHY ODOM, With best wishes for her success as a young writer of poems and short stores—from REX PHILLIPS and his old English professor, RICHARD WALSER, July 1977.” • ABOUT THIS TITLE: • “This book of miscellaneous selections about North Carolina or by North Carolinians was projected on the assumption that there are thousands of readers, like me, who have an unashamed curiosity about what has transpired on the byways as well as the throughways of life in our state. To have covered only a portion of this spacious and varied panorama would have demanded dozens of books the size of the one you have before you. Even so, it seemed to me, a trip here and there into the expanse of North Carolina deeds and documents was better than trip at all, especially when one recognizes the impossibility of satisfying a total wanderlust. “Consequently, I have fashioned a book in which my reader can once again experience with me some of the more familiar proceedings in North Carolina affairs, but with generous excursions into the less familiar and even forgotten side roads. Though VIRIGINIA DARE and THOMAS WOLFE are of course met with, I have neglected neither the Siamese Twins nor TOM DULA. Though Duke University is on our journey, we travel also to Knott’s Island. “The five sections [Places, People, Incidents, Oddments and Observations, Folklore] into which the book is divided are not exclusive; they are merely convenient. Needless to say, Places are usually dull unless People are there, People are static unless they are involved in some Incident or other, and Incidents generally provoke Observations. The section on Folklore would seem to be a thing apart. But not so. For all I know, every page in the book may be compacted of Folklore. “I have tried to reproduce my contributors and my sources faithfully, whether primary or occasionally secondary; yet I do not vouch for their validity. For instance, I am prone to question the yarn about Calico King, to say nothing of the story of the Great Fall of Flesh and Blood, but I have cited my sources and the reader, according to his bent, may place credence in them or not. Furthermore, I have a feeling that Folklore, not hard facts, characterizes a regional people…. “…The final choices are those which I personally liked and felt would provide variety for a miscellany, and which I hope readers will like…. And now a final word: Gathering together the materials for this NORTH CAROLINA MISCELLANY has been a pleasure which I wish could have been every reader’s. Never was there a boring moment….” —RICHARD WALSER, FROM THE “EDITOR’S FOREWORD” • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “THE NORTH CAROLINA MISCELLANY” EDITOR: RICHARD WALSER DRAWINGS: PAUL GRAY TYPE: HARDCOVER PUBLISHER, LOCALE, & YEAR: The University of North Carolina Press (Chapel Hill, NC), 1975 EDITION: First Edition, Second Printing (aka Second Edition)* *RE: On the Title Page, the statement “Second printing, September 1975” FIRST PUBLISHED: 1962 NOTE: This copy is NOT an ex-library copy.
