Description: Here up for grabs is a rich specimen with a nice area (pics 1 & 3) liberally sprinkled with fine hackly gold. For some reason my camera has a hard time giving gold the correct luster in photos even when it is very easily visible to the naked eye like on this piece. And there is a lot more fine gold you can see with a hand lens. The best gold is out on plain quartz but there is quite a bit more intimately associated with the limonite which makes it a bit more tricky to spot. There is also some minor pyrite surrounded by limonite as well as some malachite staining. This is a terrific example of the type of ore that they were mining here. However, most of the ore consisted of nothing but gangue and was overall very low grade ore so its extremely lucky I found this piece at all after over 100 years since they last mined there.I have never seen a specimen from this mine ever! This mine and associated buildings and headframe were some of the best historic examples in North Carolina and was actually on the National Historic Registry! Unfortunately as with many of the historic mines in the eastern US, the amazing historic buildings were razed to the ground and everything was bulldozed over to build a subdivision. This is your chance to own an amazing piece of NC history very near to where the first gold nugget in the US was found at the Reed Mine. 5.5x4.5x3 cm
