Rhododendron arboreum is an evergreen shrub in the Ericaceae family. Its native range is the Indian Subcontinent to southern Tibet and northern Myanmar. Familiar names include Tree Rhododendron. They prefer moist, well-drained soil with humus-rich and leafy soils. It is the National flower of Nepal. A perfect specimen for a woodland garden that has protection from the wind. The World's largest Rhododendron is in Nagaland, India, reaching 108 feet tall. They sometimes grow to around 70 feet though usually seen around 30 feet tall. The leaves are glossy dark green seven inches long. The bell-shaped flowers are scarlet red, around 3-4 inches in diameter. It prefers to grow in dappled shade but can live in full sun with average water needs. Zones 8-11 Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly tamp down and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
