Separating pure water and brine with a semi-permeable membrane that allows only water molecules to pass through, due to the pressure (concentration) difference on both sides of the membrane, water molecules move to the brine side. This process continues until the salt concentration on both sides equalizes. This process is known as direct osmosis. When processing highly mineralized water, reverse osmosis membrane creates a pressure exceeding the osmotic pressure, forcing water molecules to flow through the membrane in the opposite direction of direct osmosis, i.e., from highly mineralized water to the pure water compartment. The pores of the membrane are much smaller than viruses and bacteria, so they are filtered out during the filtration process. Heavy metals, dissolved substances, and salts are also removed. The main parameter defining the membrane's characteristic is its permeability. Permeability is usually measured in GPD (gallons per day). This indicates how much water the membrane can purify per day. 1 gallon equals 3.78 liters (thus, if the membrane's permeability is 100 GPD, it can purify up to 378 liters of water per day). The water entering the membrane is separated into two parts: purified water and high salinity (concentration) water, which retains all separated salts and impurities. The drinking water is supplied to the faucet or stored in pressurized tanks until there is a need for water. The concentrate is discharged into the sewage system. The ratio of drinking water to concentrate can vary (from 1:1 to 1:7) depending on the quality of water supplied to the reverse osmosis system, pressure, and the system's specific features, such as whether the system has a pump or not, and so on. The membrane is replaced every 24 to 84 months or as needed. This depends on the amount of water consumed and the permeability of the membrane.
