Description: The print is mounted on wood and is 26cm x 37cm in size. The print is made in the UK and it is part of the British Museum collection. Here is what I found out about the print. Curator's commentsIt was only in the last few months of his life that Haranobu turned to the larger 'oban' format that would become increasingly standard thereafter. The courtesan is seated, improbably, on a pack horse crossing the shallows and her 'shinzo' teenage apprentice lights her long pipe with a smouldering twig, from the kerria ('yamabuki') bush blossoming at the water's edge. The implausibility of the scene is, as often, a signal of parodic intent and as many as three different classical associations may have been combined: the Ide Jewel River, famous for its kerria; the village girl who presented kerria to the warrior Ota Dokan; and the Chinese legend of Zhang Liang and Huang Shigong A servant hands to a woman crossing river-shallows a branch of 'yamabuki' (kerria). The poem, from the anthology 'Shin Shui Wakashu', is by Motouji and can be rendered: 'On the flowing waters of the Kawase River, appearing as reflections, the 'kerria' flowers float but have not fallen.' Here the apprentice hands a 'kerria' branch to the courtesan, who is reflected in the water. The print is signed 'Painted by Harunobu'.
