Description: REPOUSSE` STERLING & ENAMEL BOWIE KNIFE CIGAR CUTTER WATCH FOB 1880's-90's ANTIQUE MINTY SMALL REPOUSSE` STERLING & ENAMEL SCARCE NOVETY FIGURAL BOWIE KNIFE CHEROOT / CIGAR CUTTER ~ FRENCH ~ CIRCA 1880’s ~ 90’s This is an eye appealing and hard to find Antique Figural late 19th Century small sterling silver repousse` hand applied dark blue enameled Bowie Knife hilt Gentleman's watch fob / cheroot /cigar cutter that dates to the 1880's - 1890's. In the late 19th Century & early 20th century, almost all men used tobacco of some sort; and Cigars and Cheroots (thin cigars) were very popular in the late 1800s. This small cheroot /cigar cutter is about 2" tall closed (about 2 ¾” tall when open) x 1/2" wide closed (not including the ring) and was intended to be carried on the end of a watch chain, i.e., used as a watch fob by hanging by the tiny loop at the side of the sheath. This small piece weighs a .4 oz. or 13 grams. Their rarity is compounded by their small size that would easily be lost. The end of a cheroot or cigar needed to be cut to allow the cigar smoke to flow properly through the cigar before lighting up. When the 3-dimensional silver early Bowie hilt style handles are pulled out, the inside spring is released showing this is a 2-piece scissors cutter with a sharpened center hole for cutting. After using, the silver handles are squeezed together and pushed back into the metal sheath with the internal spring holding the Bowie Knife cutter in the closed position. Both the handles and he sheath are made from sterling .925 silver. The silver sheath is cast in 2 shells that are 3 dimensional and silver soldered together. The Bowie knife shaped hilt (handles) are found on very early Bowie Knife handles. Each handle is cast and applied to the cutter with 2 small rivets. The repousse` pattern is hand decorated with dark blue enamel accents on the sheath. Each of the blades have a country-of-origin mark of the French Fleurs de Lis`. The blades are shiny and bright and have a few scattered small spots of naturally occurring aging. These handmade watch fob cheroot cutters were made by skilled cutlers who specialized in these novelty pieces. Considering its age and being a utilitarian object intended for daily use, this piece is in near mint condition overall condition. The blade spring is strong, the cutter works properly, and opens / closes properly, and the hand applied dark blue enamel remains intact. This would be perfect for any cheroot / cigar cutter collector, Tobacciana, Gentleman's accoutrement, Folk Art, Miniature, watch fob or smoker's collection; and could still be used today.
