De La Nuez was known for his political and cultural humor, as well as his work in painting. He graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in Journalism. In 1957, he began contributing to the humorous weekly magazine Zig-Zag. He created the character "El Loquito", which became an icon of the criticism against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, thus beginning his career as a professional cartoonist. After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, he began drawing for the newspaper "Revolucion" and collaborated in almost all revolutionary press. He created other daily press characters such as "Mogollon", "Negativo Compañero", "Blandengo" and "Barbudo", the latter being a symbol of the Cuban people and precisely the logo of the International Humor Biennial held in San Antonio de los Baños. He was internationally recognized for his humorous drawings, being considered one of the top 100 caricaturists in the world.
