Copepods: Mangroves & More copepods are shipped in a 500ml Pouch at 28 ppt to 32 ppt salinity (1.022 to 1.025) with a little bit of food (this food will not harm your tank residents). Copepods are about 2-3mm in length. Why buy copepods for my system? Copepods are the second largest source of protein in the oceans, second only to krill. They are the natural food of many fish in the oceans, especially the early life stages. Some fish will not eat non-living foods, and require live feeds such as copepods and mysids. Some good examples are: mandarin gobies, any seahorse species, scooter blennies, and early life stages of dottybacks, chromis, tangs, flame angels, etc. Owner's of these type of fish definitely need a consistent and reliable source of copepods for feeding. Reef tank systems do better when there are a variety of natural organisms to maintain the ecological balance. The reason that "live rock" or "live sand" is such a great item is that it provides a foundation for healthy microorganisms that will allow the larger, more visible fish and invertebrates to thrive. Over time, the population of the invertebrates from the live rock will naturally decline, as they are grazed by the corals, anemones, fish and shrimp in the tank. Mangroves & More copepods are a great way to boost your natural populations of copepods. You will receive a good batch of copepods in each container. If you replenish your system regularly you will give these a good chance of survival. Mangroves & More copepods are detritivores and will stay in your tank without any additional food. ACCLIMATION Mangroves Copepods are shipped in a 100ml Pouch at 28 ppt to 32 ppt salinity (1.022 to 1.025) with a little bit of food (this food will not harm your tank residents). Copepods will settle to the bottom during shipping, so if you open the bottle and don't see any, try shaking it up. We use only R.O. Saltwater 100% Our copepods are fed and grown on our phytoplankton and copepod feed, this helps to ensure they have a high nutritional profile, particularly the Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFA's), which are so important to marine fishes. You only have to look at the image of our own copepods taken under a microscope to see their wonderful colour which is a direct result of the food they eat. Most sellers will give you colourless copepods which will not be of any nutritional value to your fish particularly the mandarin which needs the Highly unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFA,S) to survive long term in an aquarium . Cheato The macro algae Chaetomorpha has become a reefers best friend in the last few years, beating out Caulerpa as the macro algae of choice. Chaetomorphais generally placed in a refugium that is connected to a saltwater reef tank where It is usually balled up. This macro algae has many benefits to a reef keeper but generally its sole purpose is to absorb nutrients such as nitrates. Chaeto as it is sometimes called has the ability to host a whole slew of saltwater organisms such as pods, mini stars, and worms. When properly cared for it grows into a dense ball that gives the organisms a place to hide. Chaetomorpha is preferred by reef tanks owners over Caulerpa because unlike Caulerpa it does not go sexual. When Caulerpa goes sexual it releases most of its nutrients it has absorbed and it could cause a tank crash. Using Chaetomorpha will help fight nuisance algae by feeding on nutrients that are used by nuisance algae thereby creating a healthy competition between the algaes. Chaetomorpha is best used in a refugium with a little flow and a light. A lot of reef keepers have had success growing this macro algae with a basic compact fluorescent 75 watt (5100K) floodlight, although for best results its better to provide a stronger light. Chaeto is a type of beneficial algae grown in aquarium sumps to remove excess nutrients and pollution. It appears to be the hardiest type of good algae. We are always amazed how it will survive a variety of conditions and light levels. Mangroves The red mangrove has its name from its stilt roots which appear to be red. It is the most wide-spread mangrove on our planet. Due to its extraordinary seed, already germinated seeds, the red mangrove manages to enter areas which other types have never reached. Its extremely strong stilt roots and high salinity tolerance level place this mangrove in the first row. Large quantities of light can hereby be transformed. The red mangrove is without a doubt the most dominant mangrove in the world. takes root on rocks and roots (like Anubias & Javafern) the plant can be grown in an aquarium/terrarium/vivarium/pot tolerates fresh water/ brackish water as well as salt water it filters the water (nitrates and phosphates) – whereby it improves the quality of the water grows slowlyaverage seed size is 12-15 inchesWhich Mangroves are perfect for fresh water aquariums? Red & Grey Mangroves due to their tolerance of high levels of salinity, warmth & cold as well as light - ideal for salt water aquariums. Yellow and Oriental Mangroves are ideal for salt water aquariums since they can also tolerate high levels of salinity, not as high as the red mangrove, but a level of 1.025 can easily be tolerated. The main difference between these two types of mangroves is that the yellow mangrove remains small and grows very slowly (one pair of leaves every 1-3 months) and the oriental mangrove grows quite rapidly (one pair of leaves every 1-2 weeks). What benefits do Mangroves have? filter nitrates and phosphates better than any other mechanical filterproduce a better atmosphere in the room or in the aquarium for the fishoffer a nesting place for nestingoffer varied green areas outside of sweet water aquariums, or brackish or salt water aquariumsshorten the settling in time of aquariums up to 80%offer wonderful hiding places for young fish and all other Live sand Packed full of good bacteria. The sand grains are approx 0.5mm-1mm in fine size.Great for cycling a new aquarium, just add to the top layer of your sand bed and it will start 'seeding' your tank system immediately. Please note that a heat pack is not required in order to get 'Live Sand' safely to its destination. In cold temperatures the bacteria on the sand will go 'dormant' and once placed in a new system at normal temperature it will awake from its dormant state. If the sand is packaged with a heat pack the heat will cause the sand to dry which will kill the bacteria.
