Description: This vintage eight-strand Sherpa "coral" necklace is stunning for the person who loves this older style made to resemble the beloved coral of the day. This necklace was made circa 1970s, among the Naga people, who used mandrel-wound tomato-y red glass beads. It is said that Sherpa coral beads first appeared as export beads from Central Europe (Czechoslovakia) in the 1920s. Wound Sherpa beads are more valuable than molded, and we know the beads in this necklace are wound given the individual character of each bead. We also know this necklace has age by looking at the old style braided closure. A real coral necklace with this many beads would sell for thousands of dollars, and so you can see why a glass bead necklace made to look like coral, would be so desirable. The eight strand necklace measures22” end to end. Weighs 115 grams. The braiding at the ends has some "give" from age yet is still in good condition.
