Their singing is created by Contracting and relaxing the internal tymbal muscles which produces a clicking sound as the tymbals curve inwards and again as they relax. The hollow abdomen amplifies the resonance of the sound. A cicada rapidly vibrates these tymbal muscles producing their own unique songs as each species has its own distinctive song.
