Description: GOOD CONDITION This sale is for a large size Late VICTORIAN hardback edition entitled “The Reader’s Handbook of Famous Names in Fiction, Allusions, References, Proverbs, Plots, Stories, and Poems,” together with an English and American Bibliography and a List of the Authors and Dates of Dramas and Operas, by the Rev. E. Cobham Brewer (1810-1897) LL.D. It was published by Chatto & Windus, of London, in 1898 and is the New Edition, revised throughout and greatly enlarged, and COMPLETE in one thick volume. The Preface to this edition is by the author’s daughter, Nellie Cobham Hayman, who states her father died in the previous year before he had finished correcting the proofs to this revision, and thanks those who helped finish this. The book measures 7.5 inches x 5.25 inches x 3 inches! and has 1,501 pages, with the text printed in two columns per page. The book is in good, generally internally neat condition for its age, with wear/scuffs and is faded and a little grubby to the original cloth hardback cover, with foxing near the covers/rims. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is a little fragile near the covers, with the blank page at the back missing and with no other loose or missing pages. There is no dust-jacket. A wonderful Late VICTORIAN edition.
