Description: US Naval history titled, "U.S.S. Augusta under fire, Sino-Japanese incident, 1937-1938, Shanghai, China."Prepared by Clad E. Polley and Myron O. Hill, printed in Shanghai, 1938. Size 6.25" x .75", 136 pages. A scarce and interesting history of the heavy cruiser Augusta's experiences while moored in the Whangpoo River during the Sino-Japanese hostilities of 1937-8, with contents including a highly detailed chronology of the events accompanied by numerous photographs, full roster, etc. One sailor KIA due to Chinese artillery fire. The "Augusta" was Admiral Yarnell's flagship. Roster includes all of the crew, officers and Marines. Also included is a roster of the crew of the "Panay," who ended up aboard the "Augusta." That list includes the sailors killed aboard the U.S.S. Panay. The actions detailed in this book were a prelude to the Japanese sinking of the U.S.S. Panay, the Rape of Nanking and our ultimate involvement in WWII after Pearl Harbor. The warning signs of treachery and barbarism were there in China in the late 1930's. This is a rare title and often sells for $300 or more if you can find them! String binding is intact. No writing. No folded corners. Very minor blemishes on the front and back cover and inside cover pages, but very few. I did not note any imperfections on the actual text pages. Not pictured, but there is a "decal" loose inside from the Rex Hotel Singapore. This sale also includes the Department of Navy Continuous Service Certificate from a person who was on the ship from March of 1938 to July 1039. Please see Photos Thank you for looking at our item.
