He enlisted as a Stoker 2nd Class into the Royal Navy on 14/3/1892, fittingly his civilian occupation being seaman. As a good junior sailor, he received two lots of cells (14 and 7 days) which did not seem to affect his character rating of good. It was whilst serving on H.M.S. Edgar (22/3/1893 – 30/9/1896) that he first suffered the loss of shipmates when the ship's pinnace capsized in a storm off the coast of, Korea. Forty-eight men were lost, with a further 23 rescued on 13/11/1895. He was on H.M.S. Goliath (battleship) from 27/3/1900 – 8/10/1903 and at the time was serving in the China Station qualifying for the China Medal whilst Acting Chief Stoker. He was promoted to Chief Stoker in 1904. He was serving on H.M.S. Bedford (Monmouth-class armoured cruisers) from 2/2/1909 – 29/10/1910 and was the Chief Stoker when she ran aground on Samarang Reef, East China Sea on 21/8/1910. He was lucky to survive as the impact sprung seams between plates on the starboard side of the bow, ripped a hole (some 30 by 20 foot) that flooded the forward boiler room, killing 18 of the 19 crewmen on duty there, and tore another (6 by 4 foot) hole in the side of the boiler room. Abandoned that day the wreck was eventually recovered and sold for scrap. Coulter was posted to H.M.A.S. Sydney (light cruiser) 17/6/1913 – 16/1/1920 as Chief stoker. The Sydney first saw action when she escorted the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force, to capture German Rabaul and Anguar Island in September. It was when she was escorting the first Australian troopship convoy to Egypt on 9/11/1914 that she engaged the S.M.S. Emden off the Cocos Islands. The Sydney being victorious for the loss of three killed and thirteen wounded from the sixteen hits she received. The remainder of the Sydney’s war was uneventful. Post war he continued to serve with the R.A.N. until being returned to the London Depot for discharge to shore ‘time expired’ on 18/11/1920. He appears on the 1939 census residing in Southall, Middlesex, as a Navy Pensioner. Please view my other collector's items for sale.
