Description: British Punch magazine -- from 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for historians.Illustrator: Leonard Raven-Hill (10 March 1867 - 31 March 1942) was an English artist, illustrator and cartoonist. From British Punch humor/satire magazine, June 23, 1915, pulled from the magazine, not a modern reproduction. Size 8 x 10 1/2 inches. Condition: excellent-- bright and clean, ho handling wear, lays flat for easy framing; backside is blankINJURED INNOCENCECitizen of Karlsruhe; “Himmel! To attack a peaceful town so far from the theater of operations! It is unheard of. What devil thought them this wickedness.”[Airmen of the Allies have bombarded Karlsruhe, the headquarters of the 14th Germany Army Corps. The town contains an important arsenal and large chemical, engineering and railway works.]--The worst German loss of life took place also by the French Air Corps on 22nd June 1916 in Karslruhe at just after 3pm. The French had old maps, possibly aiming for the main railway station the 40 bombs fell on housing areas in which 120 people were killed outright, including 71 children visiting Circus Hagenbeck (on Ettlinger-Tor-Platz) whose tent was next to the train station. A further 169 were wounded. In the whole German Reich this attack was a main theme in the press and in propaganda: “Der Kindermord von Karlsruhe” A memorial was made for the civilian losses in 1966. --This British cartoon is an example -- perhaps unintentionally, as land and sea lines for communications with Germany were cut early in the war to prevent news from reaching Allied nations --of propaganda for the home-front. The targets appear to have been legitimate, but the results were a war crime. I have other hard-to-find original Punch cartoon illustrations for sale.
