Description: This photo postcard, measuring approximately 3 ½” x 5 ½”, pictures suffragists “General” Rosalie Jones and her associate Elisabeth Freeman, both of whom worked tirelessly for the cause. It is in very good condition with no tears, bends, or stains. It has been redrawn in spots from the original photo as you can see in the remodeling of the horse, who was originally dark in color, and the re-lettering of the signs on the cart and next to the rear wheel. Although the women are not identified on the card, they are Jones and Freeman as seen from other pictures of this particular journey. Jones, sometimes called “the General” and a Long Island socialite, led marchers, often in a horse and cart, from New York City to Albany, and throughout Long Island and Ohio. Her most famous march occurred in 1913, when she organized a group of volunteers, all dressed as pilgrims, to walk from New York to Washington, D. C. Her companion, Elisabeth Freeman, was born in England and emigrated to the United States. She is also known for her investigative report for the N.A.A.C.P. on the May 1916 lynching of Jesse Washington in Waco, Texas. Earlier, while participating in a suffrage demonstration in England, she was brutally attacked and beaten by members of the police force.
