Description: F r o m T H E T E M P L E O F T H E E M E R A L D B U D D H A ! B A N G K O K 1 9 5 5 Here is a rare impression of three horses from the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok, Thailand. This was made by hand when it was still legal for people to take rice paper and some medium to make an impression of the art upon the rice paper. Since 1995 such impressions have been outlawed because it was damaging the temple art. To understand the real significance and value of these impressions we need to shine light on the mysterious Emerald Buddha itself. The Emerald Buddha is actually made of Jasper and has been a symbol of legitimate authority by Thai rulers. The older an image of Buddha is, the more power it has and likewise the impressions from the Temple of the Emerald Buddha are also believed to be imbued with the particular powers of the Emerald Buddha - prosperity, leadership and protection. These 70 year old impressions from the temple are believed by many to possess powers that bring prosperity, leadership and protection to their owner. While this may just be superstition, it is interesting to note the work has a timeless vitality and each time the work has changed hands it has made its owners successively more prosperous. It would be quite interesting to follow this piece for the next thousand years and see the roster of owners and their accomplishments. The significance of much Buddhist art has been lost, by attrition, to the passage of time. But now we have revived some of that knowledge for collectors here. Visually, the blues used to make the impressions on the cream hued rice paper, evoke fine Ming Dynasty porcelain and look elegant, powerful and masculine! Great condition. frame has some aging wear and damage ( enlarge the pic ) but the art has been well preserved from the elements with glass encasement. and is, easily, one the best early impressions I have come across. Timeless and dignified wall art for your NY or Hong Kong penthouse, Hollywood Hills estate or Palm Beach mansion! Just look at the beautiful tang horse, figuring that was displayed with this item in its original home. It’s a separate listing. 23.5“ x 33.5”
