Timothy Shay Arthur (1809-1885) — known as T. S. Arthur — was a popular 19th-century American writer. According to the preface, “the stories in this book are, with one or two exceptions, written so as to address themselves to the understandings of children and young persons who have advanced far enough to be able to discriminate, rationally, between a right and a wrong action. Their design is, to give pictures of real life, such as may be seen every day; and in these pictures to present that which is good and true as something to be loved and desired; and that which is evil and false as something to be shunned." Condition: The front hinge is cracked and there is minor weakness at the rear hinge. The cover shows wear, including corner bumping/fraying and fraying at the top and bottom of the spine. Staining and discoloration of the cover. The inside cover and facing endpapers are toned and foxed. The pages are lightly toned, lightly foxed, and some of the pages have stains (see photo of page 86/87 for an example).
