TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Title: Rare Southeast Asia Bronze Multi-armed Hindu God 'Ganesha', Khmer Angkok Wat 'Bayon' Style. Museum Quality! Description: We are pleased to present this superb and sacred example of Lord Ganesha, the elehpant-headed deity, son of Shiva and Parvati. The standing figure is a rare version of the Hindu deity, sculpted with precise detailing. xxx In Indian mythology, Ganesha is God of the universal popularity among Hindu's, an icon of luck and prosperity. He is revered as the god who eradicates danger, a god of prudence and diplomacy and is portrayed as an idol with the body of a man and the head of an elephant, having only one tusk. Ganesha's head is symbolic of the wisdom of the elephant and represents man's eternal striving towards intergration with nature. xxx The multi-armed deity is depicted standing in a strong frontal posture on a square plinth, the hands are held in the gesture of appeasement (vitarka mudra) in which the thumb and index finger are joined to form a circle. He wears a conical headdress above an interconnected arched 'Diadem' style crown. The hair is arranged in tightly matted braids, drawn up into a jeweled band bordered by a set of rings, and surmounted by a gem radiance. xxx The deity is extremely well modeled with a large pot belly, practically falling over his lower garment, which signifies the bounty of nature and Ganesha swallowing the sorrows of the Universe. Across his shoulders and about the waist is his sacred thread, the divine serpent ‘Upavita’, coiled in the form of a snake. Rich in symbolism, the figure simultaneously holds attributes in each of his hands. In the lower right-hand he holds his own broken tusk, and the lower-left hand he holds a delicacy 'Modaka', sweets which he samples with his trunk. In the two hands behind him, he holds a conch in the upper left hand, while the upper right hand holds the sutra (book). xxx He wears a knee-length vertical striated 'Chawng Khun' wrap, secured by lengths of pleated fabric forming a draping pendant sash, both front and back, complementing the front of his garment. He is further adorned with an elaborate jeweled armlets, bracelets and anklets. xxx Cast in the lost wax method, the bronze surface has a wonderfully dry patina, naturally aged to a deep chocolate brown colour, with normal wear, pitting, and is scattered overall in a beautifully layer of efflorescence of green and bluish-green malachite oxidation.
