BEAUTIFUL SOLDIERS MONUMENT ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE SIGNED BY ULYSSES S. GRANT AS THE ASSOCIATION’S PRESIDENT ON AUGUST 28, 1865 Excessively rare and highly desirable with only three other identical certificates signed by Grant having sold at auction over the past 25 years. Issued to Frederick Marsden, countersigned by S.C. Harris, contains one page, measures 17.25 by 13.25 inches, created in Galena, Illinois on August 28, 1865 (shortly after the end of the Civil War), in very good condition with creasing and staining, and nicely framed to an overall size of 20 by 15.75 inches. INCLUDES A VIGNETTE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN SURROUNDED BY CLOUDS, RAYS OF LIGHT, U.S. FLAGS, SIX TATTERED BANNERS, AND CROWNED BY AN EAGLE WITH A SCROLL IN ITS BEAK The association is named in honor of Joseph Hamilton Daviess, a Kentucky lawyer who had volunteered to serve in the Indiana militia in 1811. He was put in command of two companies of dragoons and all the cavalry in Governor William Henry Harrison’s army and was mortally wounded in the Battle of Tippecanoe on November 6, 1811.
