CONTACT US with any questions! 804 23 9 549 0 Item Description: I am pleased to offer this original hand-made heirloom Japanese army officers Samurai sword from World War 2. The blade represents the opportunity to own a historic Shinto katana by the well-known swordsmith Hoshu Yukinaga in high end Kai Gunto mounts. The blade and the mountings are in Excellent condition. It is a healthy and long sword with a blade length of 28.5 inches (72cm). It shows a well-grained and tight ko-itame hada. The hamon is a chu-suguha that is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a maru boshi. The hamon is similar to the old Kamakura-era Aoe school with a tight nioi guchi and ko-gunome, ko-ashi, and yo in and along the hamon. It is a highly refined hamon. The tang is signed Hoshu Takada Ju Fujiwara Yukinaga. The tang is ubu, or unshortened. Hoshu Yukinaga was a swordsmith working in the mid-1600’s in Bungo province. Swords from Bungo were known as fighting swords for their prowess in combat. This sword looks to fit that description and based on the age would be characterized as Shinto. It is a very healthy sword with a strong shape and good length. Probably it is one of Hoshu Yukinaga’s better swords and worthy of a restoration. The mountings are naval version Kai Gunto and are in Excellent condition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. The wrapping is tight with little to no fraying. There is a type of tassel attached to the sarute at the end of the tsuka. The tsuba is solid black with a full set of eight accompanying metal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is rayskin and in excellent condition. It shows a few small scattered spots of missing finish and light cracking, retaining roughly 92-96% original finish. The blade is in Excellent condition. There are a few small micro nicks, some scattered small spots of rust, and a few scratches along the blades length. The tip has been knocked off by 1-2mm. The blade would be an excellent candidate for restoration. There are no major flaws like hagire. Given the high-quality craftsmanship, reputation of the swordsmith, and rarity of an older Shinto in naval mounts, I think this piece would be an outstanding addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
