Its subject consists of the seashells and land mollusks of the western part of the United States, west of the Rocky Mountains. While Keep's first edition of the 1880s on the topic is rare and desirable, this 1904 edition is greatly expanded and far better, and this is the First Edition Thus (with the date of 1904 on both the Copyright Page and Title Page). Fully illustrated, the book is by Josiah Keep, A.M., Professor of Science at Mills College. Published in San Francisco in 1904 by the Whitaker & Ray Company. The full title is: West American Shells: A DESCRIPTION IN FAMILIAR TERMS OF THE PRINCIPAL MARINE, FRESH WATER AND LAND MOLLUSKS OF THE UNITED STATES FOUND WEST OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS, INCLUDING THOSE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALASKA. This is an enhancement taking the book way beyond the scope of its predecessor. According to the author in the Preface, he has "...the hope that it may have a still more extended usefulness than its predecessor. It is not a mere revision of the former book, but it has been very largely rewritten...a great number of new species have been noted, and more than a hundred new engravings have been added...(and) a Check-List has been added, which gives a fairly complete classified table of the valid species existing on this coast..." The book measures 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 x 1 inches. 360 pages. CONDITION: Very good. Slight rubbing/bumps on corners and spine ends. Prior owner's name inscribed inside front cover.
