Description: This listing is for an extraordinary chromolithograph by the German symbolist master Franz von Stuck (1863–1928), which is based on his mixed media drawing from 1889 titled "Siegergenius", or "The Victor's Genius". That work was sold at Sotheby's Munich in the 1996 sale, German and Austrian painting and drawing after 1800. See reference image. Here Von Stuck repurposes the motif as an advertisement, adopting a green color palette that gives his trumpeting angel an otherworldly pallor. This he accentuates with gold leaf to mesmerizing effect. The name ALBERT is embossed below the image and gold leafed; details about this client are unknown to me. This rare print will be featured in my forthcoming catalog focused on themes of youth. If you would like a PDF copy when the catalog is complete, please reach out. Sheet measures approximately 8-3/8"w x 12"h. Note that it does not come matted or framed; the image showing a mat is for reference only. The sheet is in good overall condition with minor surface imperfections and a stain at top left. The print itself is in good condition with a few minor marks and scratches. See images to verify condition and feel free to ask questions. Franz von Stuck (1863–1928) was a prominent German symbolist painter, sculptor, engraver, and architect. A founding member of the Munich Secession in 1892, von Stuck was a pivotal figure in the transition from academic art to modernism. Known for his mythological and allegorical subjects, he gained international recognition for works that blended classical themes with a distinctly modern sensibility. Von Stuck's influence extended beyond his art; he was a professor at the Munich Academy, where he taught several artists who would go on to shape 20th-century art, including Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. His home in Munich, the Villa Stuck, now a museum, exemplifies his vision of the total work of art, uniting architecture, interior design, and fine art.
