Description: The Cathedral of St John the Divine (sometimes referred to as “St John the Unfinished”) is the cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. It is at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, between West 100th Street and West 113th Street. The Cathedral is an unfinished building with only two-thirds of the proposed building completed, due to several major stylistic changes, work interruptions, and unstable ground on the site. The original design, in Byzantine Revival and Romanesque Revival styles, began construction in 1892. After the opening of the crossing in 1909, the overall plan was changed to Gothic Revival design. Despite being incomplete, the Cathedral is the world’s sixth-largest church by area and the second-largest Anglican cathedral. The Nave is the central part of the church, stretching from the main entrance or rear wall to the transepts. In 1916, it was announced that the diocese would construct St. Johns Nave with groundbreaking in May of that year. Construction was off and on until the Nave was completed by 1938. In 1941, the full 601-foot length of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was opened. This uncredited post card, “Made in England” has the caption on the reverse “The Temporary Choir and Sanctuary in the Nave of St. John the Divine, in the City of New York”. The card is a little smaller than a regular card and has a narrow border around the sepia image. It is in very good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image and reverse. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
