Pope Benedict XV (1854-1922), an Italian referred as the “Pope of Missions”, served as Pope of the Catholic Church (1914-1922) during WWI and focused on humanitarian efforts to lessen the impacts of the war.Pope Benedict XVI served as Pope (2005-2013) and paid tribute to Pope Benedict XV in 2005: “Filled with sentiments of awe and thanksgiving, I wish to speak of why I chose the name Benedict. Firstly, I remember Pope Benedict XV, that courageous prophet of peace, who guided the Church through turbulent times of war. In his footsteps I place my ministry in the service of reconciliation and harmony between peoples.”The plates have scalloped edges and central gold gilt Papal Seals over the milky white background. The surrounding areas have hand-painted flamboyant floral themes and motifs with gold gilt decorations over the cobalt blue background. The major floral themes have five patterns and each plate contains three in verities. The backs of the plates are all gold gilt marked with “Manufactured For His Holiness Pope Benedikt XV ANO 1915”. The rims of all the bases are also gold gilt decorated. Each plate in the center of the back has a unique dark disc about a US quarter dollar size displaying metallic sheen under light. Among the 12 plates, 7 plates are found to have the hand-written number "6719", either next to the disc in red or on the disc in dark color. Measures: 11” Plate diameter; 6 ½” Base diameter. Condition: Very good, 10 plates have no chips, cracks or breaks whereas 2 plates have minor chips under the edge as shown in the photo. Very mild gold gilt loss to the decorations in some plates.
