Original 1826 Declaration of Independence cotton textile featuring a decorative illustration of a grapevine border with oak leaves and acorns and the Great Seal of the U.S. at the top and two vignettes of the Boston Tea Party and General Burgoyne’s Surrender at the Battle of Saratoga at the bottom, along with three portraits of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and John Adams and the seals of the thirteen colonies surrounding the text of the Declaration and facsimile signatures of the fifty-six Signers. ORIGINAL 1826 DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE COTTON TEXTILE FEATURING A DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION This type is listed in Herbert Ridgeway Collins’ Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present as item number 23 on page 57 (the illustration example was provided by the Smithsonian). Contains red ink on yellow-beige cotton fabric, measures 33.5 by 28.375 inches, and in good to very good condition having been adhered to a cardboard mat, with fabric tape overlaying all four edges (causing some of the corners to be worn and frayed), staining throughout, multiple stitched repairs throughout (including at the center, edges, and among the signatures), and a hole is in the eagle’s right wing, among an area of stitching at the lower left edge, and on the top of the border encircling Jefferson’s portrait. DEPICTS THE GREAT SEAL OF THE U.S., BOSTON TEA PARTY, SURRENDER OF GENERAL BURGOYNE, PORTRAITS OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS, TEXT OF THE DECLARATION, AND FACSIMILE SIGNATURES OF THE SIGNERS An extremely rare and highly desirable historical relic with an identical one commanding as much as $21,250 at Heritage Auctions in June 2022.
