Description: LISTED HERE A MAGNIFICENT HARDBACK PICTURE FROM THE ARCHIVES. HISTORY OF RAILWAYSCompleted in 1883, the line of the Dublin& Lucan Steam Tramway ran from the terminus of the Dublin United Tramways at Convngham Road, out to the village of Lucan, a distance of about 7 miles. An extension was built subsequently from Lucan to Leixlip, a distance of just under 2 miles, by a separate company, but this extension was worked by the original company. The line ran along a slightly raised track on the side of the public road, and it was electrified at the end of the century. Our photograph, taken in 1895, shows two school excursions at Ballydowd, about a mile east of Lucan. The locomotive in the foreground, No 6, a standard tramway 0-4-0 tank engine, was built by Kitson of Leeds in 1887.
