Description: For your consideration: A very rare bronze sculpture by Betty Oros, born Elisabeth Anna Thatcher, known as Betty Thatcher, who was the first full-time female American automotive industry’s designer. She was hired by Hudson Motors in 1939 and later became credited in styling the 1941-47 Hudson Cab Pick-up. Being the first female car designer in the US, perhaps in the world, she is recognized as an Automotive pioneer and responsible for opening the floodgates for women to an industry, which up to that point was entirely controlled by men. Betty Thatcher married Joe Oros in 1941. They met at the Cleveland Center for Art and Design, where Joe was studying under Victor Schreckengost. At the time Joe Oros was already a designer at the Cadillac studio at General Motors. When Betty and Joe became engaged, one of them had to quit their jobs, both being car designers, to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. Joe resigned and later became the Chief of design at Ford Motor Company form 1955-1975, where he was responsible for overseeing the team that would design the legendary 1964-1/2 Ford Mustang and was credited for designing the first Pony car. Joe and Betty Oros were married until 2001, when she passed away. I came about this sculpture in 2012, when the family of Joe Oros sold the entire Estate in Santa Barbara, which included the rarest of Mid-Century furniture, rare Ford Memorabilia, model cars, a Ford library, artwork, sculptures that were created and signed by both Betty and Joe Oros. I ended up acquiring most of the Estate and have kept many of the items over the years. Joe Oros passed away later that year in 2012. If you do an online search on both Joe Oros and Betty Thatcher Oros, you will will recognize their impact on American culture and design. The sculpture: It is made of solid bronze and depicts a helmet shaped skull with hollow interior channels which almost remind us of a women’s womb - a chamber of creation, life and the birth place of creativity. It is mounted on a 3-1/2 inch square wooden block and stands 10 inches tall including the block. The sculpture itself is 6-1/2 inches tall. The bottom of the wooden block is signed “B. Oros.” This is a great opportunity to own a rare piece of art work by one the most important female industrial designers in American culture. A delight for any collectors of unique art.
