" Travers' Golf Book "The very scarce, true First Edition, First Printing, May, 1913.This is Travers' first book. Jerome Dunstan "Jerry" Travers (1887-1951) was one of the leading amateur golfers of the early 1900s. He won the United States Amateur in 1907, 1908, 1912 and 1913, the New Jersey Amateur three times, and the Metropolitan Amateur (New York) five times. Travers was regarded as one of the finest match play golfers of his time and had a famous rivalry with Walter Travis. He went on to win the 1915 U. S. Open ( professional golf ).He is remembered as one of the finest amateur golfers of all time and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1976. ---- The Contents includes : My First Home Course , Alex Smith Becomes My Tutor , Douglas and Travis , The Ball in the Indian's Pocket , Winning the Metropolitan , My First National Championship , How To Learn To Play Golf , Practical Points about the Drive , The Drive continued , How To Play the Brassie , How To Play the Cleek , The Golfer's Favorite Club - the Mid Iron , The Usefulness of the Jigger , Mastering the Difficult Mashie , When and How To Play the Mashie Niblick , Putting - A Test of Nerve , Bunker Shots and How To Play Them , Psychology of Golf , Why the Business Man Should Play Golf , Holes In One and other Remarkable Shots , The Etiquette of Golf , First Aid to the Golfer " Off His Game " With 48 Illustrations. ------ Condition.Scarce as this book is, it does have condition issues. At some point in the past this book got wet, which mostly affected the front cover and the first few pages, and to a lesser degree the pages thereafter. The front cover has wear and staining and is a bit bowed ( see the photos ).The spine has some wear. The rear cover has just light wear ( see the photos ).The inner hinges are split but are still firm.Remnant of an old ink inscription on the front endpaper ( dated July, 1913 ).The frontispiece plate (and its tissue-guard) and the title-page have fairly heavy staining. The old water-staining continues on the first several pages, but fades as the pages go on.It fades to being just barely visible after the "Contents" pages. The staining remains lightly visible at the bottom margin of the pages throughout the book, and tends to become more visible at the margin of the illustration plates and the text pages which face them ( it varies, some barely noticeable, others somewhat heavier). Otherwise, the book is in good condition. There is no bad odor, at all. Not in perfect condition, but the true first edition, first printing of this, Travers' first book, is downright rare. I find no other example of the May, 1913 printing for sale anywhere, nor any record of any which have sold online, ever.( I do find some "June, 1913" examples, however those are not the first printing! ) Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer.
