Ref: Whitman 414 Rare. By some considered one of the most beautiful falconry related prints. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Samuel William Reynolds' after 'James Northcote'. Samuel William Reynolds (1773-1835) was a mezzotint engraver and painter in England. He studied under Charles Howard Hodges and John Raphael Smith. His first work is dated 1794. He gained popularity in France and later produced a series of over 350 small mezzotints after paintings of Joshua Reynolds. James Northcote (1746-1831) was an English painter. Although he was originally apprenticed to his father (a watchmaker), he painted and drew in his spare time. In 1769 he left his father and set up as portrait painter. He then studied under Joshua Reynolds. His works total around 2000. Subject: Antique Master Print, titled: 'The falconer.' - Portrait of Samuel Northcote, junior, holding a falcon.Condition: Good, given age. Remains of attachment to carrier to the rear of the sheet. Margins cropped over the image edge, with a loss of image on the left and right sides (part of the dog in the lower right corner, and part of the falcon's tail). Very nice impression. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
