Description: A highly unusual photograph of a proper gentleman ca. 1880s-1890s with a huge mustache and, strangely, a skull and crossbones tie pin. Could he be an early member of Yale's Skull and Bones Society?Possibly, but I cannot confirm that. Just a guess. The Totenkopf, as it is sometimes known, has been associated throughout history with different groups and meanings: The KNIGHTS TEMPLAR. FREEMASONS and Masonic rituals. Various Military Groups. References to MEMENTO MORI. PIRATES, POISON, and, of course, DEATH. This photo was apparently taken in Staten Island, New York. The printed inscription on the reverse of the card reads: “I. Almstaedt, Portrait & Landscape Photographer, Tompkinsville, S. I. Publisher of Photographs of Staten Island Scenery.” Isaac Almstaedt (1851-1921) is well-known to Staten Island historians. There are some SCRATCHES IN THE IMAGE. The Card has been CUT DOWN. It is now 4” x 5 3/4”. PLEASE SEE PICTURES. Sold AS IS.
