Description: Royalty History at Argyll Etkin Ltd RARE LETTER PRINCE ARTHUR DUKE OF CONNAUGHT FROM POONA INDIA ADEN Fine 3 page ALS from Prince Arthur Duke of Connaught (1850-1942) to Sir John Clayton Cowell, Master of the Household for Queen Victoria and previously Governor to Prince Alfred, referring to Aden and written from Poona February 21st 1890. Served as Governor of Canada, and was born the 7th child and third son of Queen Victoria. He served as a lieutenant for 40 years in the British Army including service in South Africa, Canada in 1869, Ireland, Egypt in 1882, and in India from 1886 to 1890: "Poona Feb: 21/90 My dear Cowell, I thank you very much for your letter of the 14th inst:- I had a letter from Mrs Nicholson thanking so much for the facilities that had been given to her for seeing the pictures at Buckingham Palace. She thoroughly enjoyed her visit to the galleries and came back very full of the different beautiful pictures she had been allowed to see. e I had a very satisfactory inspection of Aden and the neighbouring coast - Aden itself has been very strongly fortified and the fortifications themselves are nearly complete, all that is wanted are the B.L. xx for which we have been waiting these last two years. I witnessed a very interesting and well developed night attack on Aden by HMS Rangoon and the IMS xx with numerous launches - the attack was very nearly successful owing to the absence of any search lights ashore. We are leaving this for good tomorrow and proceed to Bombay till we sail for Ceylon on the 13th xx:- I enclose an itinerary [not included] of our tour as I think it may interest you - with many messages from the Duchess to yourself and from us both to Lady Cowell.
