Owner said Golub would pay his dentist (on Gramercy Park) with artwork and this was one he bought back. Number 5 of only 20. Number 1 is in a collection at The Museum of Modern Art in NYC. It is pencil signed, numbered and titled. It bears the chop marks of both Kenneth Tyler - The master printer at Tamarind Litho Workshop and the chop mark of Tamarind Lithography Workshop. It also comes with Tamarinds original documentation sheet. Leon Golub was an American painter. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, where he also studied, receiving his BA at the University of Chicago in 1942, and his BFA and MFA at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1949 and 1950, respectively. He was married to and collaborated with the artist Nancy Spero.As a leader of Chicago’s figurative movement in the 1950s, Leon Golub has always rejected a detached, distanced approach to art, instead espousing expression and confrontation. Described as an existential and activist painter, Golub gained recognition for his large-scale, politically charged, highly topical works that directly address issues of war, racism, sexism, and power.
