Description: JULIAN TREVELYAN RA - Bedford School A rare limited edition original lithograph by Julian Trevelyan which we cannot find elsewhere for sale and can find nothing about it online. The lithograph is of Bedford School, a famous public school founded in 1552. It is in fantastic strong bright colours, a striking image showing a group of pupils playing rugby in front of the imposing architecture of the school. An unusual departure from Trevelyan’s more common images with the focus on people in this one, so it would make a great addition to a collection. Signed, titled and numbered 35 from the edition of 100 in pencil. The work dates from 1963. Measurements: 46.5 x 56 cm plate size Condition: Image excellent, strong colours, the work has a vertical fold an inch in from the edge on each side but well away from the image. A soft crease diagonally top left which hasn’t disturbed any ink. To the left and right centre margin there are the printer's registration marks, little dot holes, (see photos) which would have been used to ensure the accuracy of layers of colour in the lithography process. A couple of faint marks and traces of printing ink to the margins. Very minor. Will be gently rolled for shipping, can be combined with other suitable works for £1 additional postage (£3 overseas). Highly collected artist and printmaker recognised as an innovator of modern printing techniques, and a driving force in the field of etching. He had little formal training other than under Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 (1930-4). It was during this time that he became influenced by surrealism and was a founding member of the English surrealist group in 1936 – exhibiting work at the groundbreaking International Surrealism exhibition in London the same year. He had his first one man show at the Lefevre gallery in 1937, became a member of the London Group in 1948 and taught at Chelsea and the Royal College of Art where he became head of the Etching Department. His students included David Hockney, R B Kitaj and Norman Ackroyd. He travelled widely with his 2nd wife, Mary Fedden, and many of the locations he visited were captured in his works.
