Description: A VERY NICE COLLECTION OF FORMALLY PRODUCED STAMP SETS DEALING WITH UK ROYALTY, AS WELL AS SHAKESPEARE STAMPS, AND ASSOCIATED EPHEMERA. At the heart of this collection is a "History of Philately" Limited Collection titled, "Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Second 2 June 1953". It was produced by Malcolm C. Dizer (1886-1978). Malcolm Dizer was a British-American philatelist who assembled a number of specialized postage stamp collections under the general topic of "History in Philately". They are an excellent example of the use of postage stamps to preserve collective memory. More information on Malcolm Dizer can be found in a website with the title, "Malcolm C. Dizer and "History in Philately" " that is produced by University of California, Berkely. In addition to this core album, this listing includes: 1) A privately produced stamp set titled, "1937 May 12 King George VI Queen Elizabeth Coronation", 2) A small stamp set on Edward VIII Abdication - this was also produced by Dizer and appears complete, 3) a partial stamp set on Shakespeare, done by Dizer, but this one is incomplete, and 4) Ephemera associated with Malcolm Dizer and the 1953 Coronation. Here is more detail on each of these: 1) "HISTORY IN PHILATELY - CORONATION OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND 2 JUNE 1953." This is a complete Malcolm Dizer "History of Philately" set limited to 500 numbered and signed copies; this one is # 211. Published in 1953. It has 46 pages (23 leaves) contained in a 24-ring custom binder with a matching custom slip case. Each leaf was housed in a clear plastic sleeve; both the leaf and the sleeve had 24 rings to fit in the binder (in case someone wanted to house the leaves outside the sleeves). The are many color and B&W plates with photos and history of the Coronation. The stamps are described and contained in a 20 page (10 leave) section that contains 122 stamps. Included is the set is a 40 page approved souvenir program. There are many online listings of this approved souvenir program alone. The slipcase and binder are in superb NEAR FINE condition. Several of the plastic sleeves holding the leaves have a bit of waviness near the bottom due to plastic sleeve shrinkage presumably. None of the stamps are affected. 2) A homemade extensive set of stamps associated with the "1937 May 12 King George VI Queen Elizabeth Coronation". These were also housed in 24-hole plastic sleeves, and were found in the binder but removed for this listing, in the same History in Philately black binder. The title page of this set was fashioned from a magazine illustration. Including the 3 stamps on this title page, this set includes 204 stamps from a wide variety of countries. HOWEVER, AND IMPORTANTLY, these stamps were held in place on generic stamp sheets with the use of thin clear tape top and bottom of stamps. I'm not an expert in these matters, but this does not appear to be an appropriate method to store stamps. While a nice set for sure, potential buyers should consider this stamp storage method. 3) "An Edward VIII Collection Fashioned to Honour a King-Emperor Destined to Immortalize the Most Moving Episode in Modern Times". This very set was shown in detail (individual pages) in the Dizer web page in the UC Berkely site noted above. The set is housed in a textured 11" by 9" envelope containing a single folded 4-page similarly textured folder with 15 properly mounted stamps on this episode. The back of this folder (not shown in listing photo) gives a description of "Edward's Farewell", his Abdication, which was the focus of this small collection. It is in GOOD CONDITION. The flap of the envelope is torn, and the 4-page folder is a bit soiled with small tears along the fore-edges. 4) A Shakespeare set which includes an 11.5" by 9.0" envelope, an 8-page information booklet made of textured clean paper, and a separate sheet similarly textured with 9 stamps affixed. These stamps look unprofessionally affixed similar to the King George VI collection. However, this Shakespeare ensemble is part of a larger Dizer collection (information plus stamps). It does not appear to have been a limited and numbered set. Information on the complete set can be found on the Dizer home page of the UC Berkely site noted above. 5) Finally, a set of ephemera that do not appear to be associated with any of the above or other collections: a) 2 xerox copies (presumably - don't look original) of letters to Malcolm Dizer - 1 dated 10/1/53 from Winthrop Aldrich who was the US Ambassador to the UK at this time, and the other from Thomas Dunnigan, 2nd Secretary of the Embassy. Both address transmittal of copies of the 1953 Coronation album to the Queen and the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill b) 3 xerox copies of articles on Dizer and these stamp sets c) 1 glossy photo of a portrait of the Queen by Dorothy Wilding, Engraved and Printed by J. Arthur Dixon. The back of this picture suggests it may have been glued to something at one point d) 1 used post-marked postcard from Vienna to the US A VERY NICE STAMP AND EPHEMERA COLLECTION!! SLL
