Description: This listing is for a rare antique albumen portrait of a young couple in drag, dating to around 1880 and likely made in France. It came to me from a private French collection, and represents a seldom-seen glimpse into the hidden world of 19th-century queer expression. Upon viewing the image, immediate questions arise: Are these two young people friends or lovers, or perhaps brother and sister, or cousins? And is this performance one of amusement or social defiance? The gender-bending costumes and makeup are outstanding, but the star of the show is the 'gentleman' at left. Note their superb expression, pose, and seemingly effortless positioning of props—the cigar and cane are held "just so", for instance, and those reading glasses perched atop their nose... All of it is exceptionally well done, elevating this portrait beyond the merely casual, humorous picture it may have been meant to be, and leaving us with an extraordinary historical record. Drag and gender play held a complex place in 1880s French society. While not openly accepted in mainstream culture, there was a vibrant underground scene, particularly in urban areas like Paris. These performances often took place in private clubs or at masked balls, allowing for a degree of freedom and expression not possible in everyday life. Photos that document this world are rare and were often kept private. Further, it is plausible that most did not survive, a fact that underscores how lucky we are to lay eyes on this piece of early queer history. The photo is approximately 5-1/8"w x 7"h. It is in excellent overall condition with minor surface imperfections, marks, and scratches. Note impressions at the corners from album mounting, and an irregular scissor-cut edge on two sides. There is a mark in the print at lower left, likely caused by a flaw in the negative. The albumen print exhibits rich, deep tones and clarity. The image shows excellent contrast, with dark blacks and a full range of mid-tones that bring out the fine details of the subjects' costumes and expressions. The print's surface retains its characteristic glossy sheen, indicative of well-preserved albumen prints from this period. As expected, the paper is thin and will curl when unsupported. Image will be shipped in a plastic sleeve. See images to verify condition and feel free to ask questions.
